our attitude toward life

I always advise my daughters to focus on what they love (versus what they hate) and to look for the positive in people and situations (instead of wallowing in the negative).   I try to share words of wisdom… like, “a positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events and outcomes.  It is a catalyst and it sparks extraordinary results.” (This wisdom courtesy of Wade Boggs).  Do inspired quotes inspire them?  The jury is still out…

Pondering the 80/20 principle recently.  You might know it as the Pareto Principle which states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes.   In the office we say, 80% of our sales come from roughly 20% of our clients.  The principle is rooted in the Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto‘s observation from 1906 that 80% of the land in Italy was owned by 20% of the population.  Here is the one I love…. 20% of the pea pods in Vilfredo Pareto’s garden contained 80% of the peas.  Fascinating, right?  My own little spin: I wear 20% of my clothes 80% of the time!  In my garden, its seems to be 20% blooms and 80% green foliage.

I am feeling blessed by my flower fairies.

I am not sure where I am going with this line of thought.  Maybe, just maybe, this principle might  advance happiness? By taking notice of what areas of our lives make our heart sing (that magical 20% that causes 80% of happiness) perhaps we could actively expand h a p p i n e s s!

What 20% is driving the best moments in your life?

One obvious ingredient in my 20% bucket: creating!  After picking up these slides at an antique store in 2010, I finally found a method to honor them!IMG_2263

I simply wedged each into a no-glass photo frame.  Now they have a home near my kitchen sink where the light illuminates each image.  LOVE!

Of course, I have a related song suggestion.  I just might include a song with every post this year.  Music affects my “happy” barometer.  You are probably thinking…. Partridge Family theme song (hello, world, hear the song that we’re singin’; c’mon get happy!).

Nope…check out You Could be Happy by Snow Patrol.

I especially love these lyrics….

Do the things
That you always wanted to
Without me there to hold you back
Don’t think,
Just do.
