Happy 4th of July!

Making a flag cake is a 4th of July tradition that my mom started years ago back when we celebrated on the shores of the Mississippi.

To make this flag cake, the girls used a 9 x 13-inch cake pan to bake a Betty Crocker yellow cake.  To decorate the cake, you will need a pint of raspberries or strawberries, one pint of blueberries and fluffy Cool Whip as your “frosting.”  Spread the Cool Whip topping generously over the cake.

In the top left-hand corner of the frosted cake, arrange the blueberries into an outline of a rectangle.  Fill the blueberry outline in with the remaining blueberries. They look best placed in rows.

Place raspberries (or strawberry halves cut-side down) in rows going across the cake horizontally.  Enjoy!

A fourth of July favorite – making shapes with sparklers!
