Silver Lining

  • a metaphor for optimism
  • in the common English-language idiom, “Every cloud has a silver lining.”

The universe harshly reminded my daughter that she is a dancer; not a gymnast.

One dislocated elbow and a subsequent fracture delivered the painful message. The night of the incident found us in an ambulance and an Emergency Room.  The first text message I received the morning after the sleepless night read, “Stay Positive.”  It was a jolt of reality: I had not found a single silver lining during the prior 12 hours.  I try to live on the sunny side of life; in fact I am quite certain that I frequently annoy those around me with my there must be a blessing attitude.  Since I was feeling anything but optimistic; I appreciated the gentle reminder to remain positive as I navigated physician follow-up visits, CT scans and trying to make her comfortable.

And so the search for metaphorical silver linings began…  We started by observing we were glad it was her elbow, versus her leg.  She had wanted to see the inside of our nearby hospital – grateful we had never needed to but glad she met an amazing team of medical caregivers and had a tour.  Silver linings.  The ambulance driver gifted her with a stuffed animal.  Silver linings.  Her grandparents dropped everything and made the 4-hour trek to bring her flowers, offering anything to relieve her pain.  Our dog has been a gentle caregiver, reluctant to leave her side.  Silver linings.

When she was disappointed with the color of her sling; she creatively found a solution.

She was showered with treats and love.  Silver linings.

where no one believes in silver linings
or love or happy endings.”
